90% of my day revolves around postcards, and yet i speak very little of them on this blog. so today i thought i’d share some of the best postcards i’ve found in slovenia. it’s still too early to judge the ones from berlin, but slovenia has plenty to share! here are some of my favourites (click for bigger):

when you settle in a new city, there are some things that take a bit to discover. like where to do your waxing, which café makes the best pancakes, or where to develop your film rolls. for the film issue, sometimes you can find tips on flickr groups or old photography forums but more often than not, the information there is outdated. so, a period of trial and error ensues.

the first shops we found in ljubljana that developed medium format rolls weren’t very promising – it always took a while for them to return the negatives, and sometimes they came with marks…

but after inquiring here and there, someone pointed out foto format, in the tunnel on the skyscraper building. and lo and behold, in that small and inconspicuous shop we found the answer to our analog prayers. efficient service with a smile, always plenty of film in stock on the fridge, quick delivery and spotless negatives. we love it and remain faithful customers since day one. really, what else could you ask for? :)

christmas market in ljubljana

hello! happy new year!
it’s been quiet here, but like always on the first day of the year, there’s new energy to do the things we’ve kept postponing… like blogging :)

we’ve spent christmas in portugal with our families, like we always do. travelling here in mid-december involved a late plane and a missed connecting flight in london, with a consequent pricey flight purchase for the next day and the inevitable overnight stay in an airport. but hey, after years of changing planes in london and never visiting the city, i finally stepped out of an airport and took the subway – to another airport, but still! i can say i’ve used london’s metro! :)
all in all, we were rather lucky, considering all the stories we’ve been reading!

before we left for portugal, we made sure to enjoy the christmas market in ljubljana. the light decorations take a less christian theme there, focusing on stars and planets instead. there are stalls selling things like winter gloves, sweets, honey or christmas decorations and others with lots of food… and of course, gluhwein and hot chocolate. yum!
the whole concept of a christmas market is something i really like: it gives people enough incentive to brave the snow and come out on the streets in these cold december nights. here’s what it looked like this year:

čajna hiša

čajna hiša is a tea house, like the name says… but there’s a lot more to it than just tea.

sure, the tea selection is endless and quite tempting. but there’s also muffins, for instance, lovely chocolate/banana muffins that look and taste like they’ve just been taken from the oven. or banana/walnuts/bran flakes/raisin yogurt cups drizzled with honey. or delicate apricot strudel. or huge cups of coffee with milk that we savour till the last drop.

you can probably tell how much we love the place. :) it’s got top marks across the board: it’s cozy, the food is delicious and served in cute looking cups/plates and the waiters are always nice – something that is getting hard to find in ljubljana these days. must be the summer season: dealing with tons of tourists is probably taking its toll on the service around here.

anyway, we highly recommend it. it’s in stari trg, 3 – right in the middle of the old town. enjoy! :)

…yeah, not much to say. these are from what i thought was the last snow of the season, but hey… it’s snowing again!
i suppose i should look at it from the bright side – more time for winter sports, right? except… i gave snowboarding a try some weeks ago, and was beaten bad, with bruises to prove it. plus, i’ve developed a mild fear of button lifts…
i’ve been gathering up courage to go back. i mean, i doubt i’ll ever live 30 min from the slopes again, so i should enjoy it, right? right. ok, let’s do this.

perhaps because of its closeness to italy, ljubljana has quite a number of pizzerias. most of these have a wooden oven in a corner, and the pizzas are done in front of you. i’m not a pizza specialist, but i think they’re quite good!

trta is a cozy little place by the river, in the south side of the city. they have a nice service and biiiig pizzas with good ingredient combinations. we tried the desserts (tiramisu and pears in wine) and they got thumbs up as well! i really like this place, the decoration makes it feel quite homey and it never seems crowded. also, bonus points for having cesária évora playing on the background :)

i’ve never been to japan, but sometimes when i look at these snowy photos, i imagine what it would be like to stand in the middle of a field of cherry blossom trees. it would be really neat – and probably not so cold… my camera doesn’t like the cold so much, though my fingers and body seem to be adapting to winter rather well – i’m the strange girl who doesn’t need gloves when it’s minus 10 degrees outside… :/
