doing a calligraphy class had been on my plans (and list) for ages. i’ve always been attracted to nice penmanship, so it seemed like the next logical step. last week, i found one class by accident through gidsy and enlisted right at the last minute.
the class was great, and we learnt how to draw most letters of lowercase english copperplate script. it’s a relatively simple script, but hard work nonetheless! by the end of it, my hand was hurting from all the tension i was putting on my nib, but i felt like we were all more confident and ready to start practising on our own. i certainly intend to! :)

I have had calligraphy class on my “to do” list forever! I love seeing your practice sheet. Looks great! What did you use for a pen?
@PostMuse: the instructor gave us some special nibs and holders, they looked like this one: http://cdn.johnnealbooks.com/images/NibHolderDemo2.jpg
That is what I think I have somewhere. I think I might try learning from a book, but a class would be more fun. Even though I work in a city, I live very rural and it is so hard to find classes of any sort that aren’t a long drive away.
Good job! Ana!
I’ve got all the respect in the world for people with good penmanship.
With the digital age and keyboard becoming the norm – some of the handwriting that you see from kids these days will not even pass for Chicken Scratch.
And as for fingers hurting… well, my dad has a lot to do with my penmanship (not suggesting that I have the greatest handwriting out there, but its legible) :)
Good on you Ana for taking this on.
Hi Ana,
I’ve been to Giuseppe’s classes too and I miss them so much! Maybe you are interested in these (which I’m organizing):
