the ode to dad.

(i saw rita made a post about her dad, and i suddenly felt like doing something similar here too. thanks for the idea :) )

my family was always a different one.
mom worked a lot. more than 30 hours in a row, at least twice a week (and amazingly, she still does). when she was home, we weren’t allowed to make any noise – a rule which later was responsible for us listening to music much lower than most people, i think.

so, anyway, how did me and my brother end up normal healthy kids?
yes, you might have guessed it, the trick was my dad. he woke up early, fed, washed, drove us to school, went to the teachers meetings, took us to the hairdresser and the dentist, invented new foods (pasta with sausages was his and our favourite!) etc etc etc.
on top of it all, he still had a semi-normal job with some degree of liberty and he helped my mom with the housework. wait, i know what you are thinking – “helped with the housework” is an ironic expression that is often a sinonym of joyfully washing the dishes once a week.
well, that wasn’t the case at all. the proof is i’ve never seen my mom ironing any single piece of clothing or vaccum cleaning.
that’s just the way it is.

dad.

< we've had our ups and downs, but some people are special, i guess. my most treasured memories are from a period in which my mom was finishing some sort of degree or post-graduation and she had to study a lot. my dad would take us two to porto on the train with a kilo of rice and we'd spend the afternoon there, feeding the pidgeons. on the picture you can see him and nani, my little cousin – who we took there a few years ago, just for the fun of doing it once again. we still love it. and i love you dad.

to be or niet to be.

“One night to be confused
one night to speed up truth
we had a promise made
four hands and then away”

there’s mr. gonzales on repeat on itunes, and a lot of people sitting on the floor of the corridor, slowing chatting away the last hour of the weekend. K went away this week, and it was hard for all of us to lose her. we stayed out silent in the parking lot for some time, watching the car go away, waiting for something to happen, just something. anything. it felt amazingly wrong. later the same day, another girl came to her room. and it just felt wrong, again.
going away is just a natural part of it all, i guess. the end. but no one wants to face it, the ones that were able to postpone the return did it, and i’m still searching for that internship. next week i have an interview, let’s see how that goes. i hope i can manage.

because i felt wrong about mixing netherlands-colored-digital pictures with the ones i had on my flickr account, i created another one, for this purpose. it’s here. it’ll come handy to put the pictures i usually blog about, since my other account already passed the 200 photos limit…

introduction

erasmus is a whole full-time job, i discovered. the shorter periods have proved to be much more intense and deadlines come really quick. which is good, in a way – two months and a half have past and i’ve already done 2 subjects. 4 to go now. the drawback is, of course, the little time one has left for the rest of the things. still, paulo & i, we’ve managed to set up the “tips” exhibit again, this time on the IWI (informatica and wiskunde = informatics and maths) canteen, here in groningen, on the zernike complex. if you don’t know it yet, you can come and see :)

also, me, levi, paulo and a couple of friends went to utrecht last weekend, because p. had been studying there and kind of missed the place. utrecht seems nice. we saw sinterklaas arriving from spain and giving cookies to kids, ate stroopwaffles and roamed around for the afternoon. i loved the gracht’s (the canals ?) with their sidewalks and hidden places under the streets – much unlike grrroningen ones.
i noticed people kind of look down on groningen and the northern part of the netherlands, “we’re” somewhat seen as “the farmers”. it’s true, the city surroundings are much more quiet and rural than in other bigger cities, i guess, but still, perfect for getting away of the city without having to go through the (ugly) suburban rush. i’m loving this city even more as i discover others. it’s just… different.

ps – can’t find the key to my bike/place, and i must have lost it yesterday during class. life here doesn’t make sense without a bike.

photographic challenge

Think of 3 pictures you’d like to see. Things around my house or whatever… something I can take a picture of easily. Once I have enough requests, I’ll start posting them. If I can’t or won’t take a picture of something you’ve requested, I’ll let you know.

(as seen here. just leave your requests on the comments. :) )
