post-flight checks complete!

p. has a soft spot for planes… so this year, for his birthday, i offered him a flight on a glider. the teacher was very nice and let me sit in on the pre-flight lesson too, so i got to learn about the four forces keeping the plane in the air (weight, lift, drag and thrust!) and how gliders go up (using thermal columns). some of the things we learned were actually quite technical, and i took lots of notes.

there’s a lot of physics involved in flying a plane, as you’d expect, but i loved every bit of it! it also brought back fond memories of listening to cabin pressure. so anyway, after the lesson, the boy strapped on his life-jacket parachute, pushed the glider onto the runway, hopped in and off they went!

a plane towed the glider to a decent altitude, and then suddenly let them loose to do their thing, up and down across the sky, and then slooooowly back to the ground…

after an hour or so, he landed safe and sound (whew!), and quite happy! :)

afterwards, we went for some peas with poached eggs with the flight instructor — the perfect ending to a great day! :)

101 things in 1001 days — here we go again!

my previous list ran out of time a couple of months ago, and frankly, i was happy to see it go. moving from germany to portugal halfway through it changed some of our priorities, and i ended up letting go of the list and focusing my energy other things which were more pressing. the list ended up at 38% done, which was rather dismal…

no matter — we shall do better this time around! :) as usual, it took me a couple of months to work through each item on the new list… it does get harder and harder everytime. ideally, you want to be ambitious but realistic, daring but sure you can make it. it’s not easy, but it’s fun and i truly enjoy the process of making the list almost as much as ticking off the items, one by one.

day

so anyway, the fourth edition of the list is ready. time to get some coffee and seize the day! :)

one second everyday — september 2016

keeping up with the tradition of exciting septembers past, this one was no disappointment!

there was time with the family and friends, updates to Postcrossing, races and kittens… but the highlight of the month was definitely a much-awaited visit to slovenia, in which we went back to all our favourite places and filled our souls with greenness. i’m convinced there’s no place quite like it in the world. :)

one second everyday — august 2016

we decided to stay put in august, and just go with the flow…

the long days were filled with a flurry of visitors, concerts, summer fairs and tons of basil promptly turned into delicious pesto! <3
