aveiro just life

weeknotes, 18-19/26

two very full, very busy weeks. week 18 was just tidying up the house and getting it ready to leave for a bit. paulo finished hacking the bamboo that we’ve been trying to get rid of for some time, because it just keeps spreading everywhere… it was a whole thing and a hard lesson learned. never plant bamboo, kids!

we walked around town, saw birds, met friends, played games, got prescribed some more vitamin D and iron…

… and then packed the car with all the things we might need for coming north because we’re kind of moving to aveiro!

moving is not an easy decision to make, but it slowly became clear it might be a necessary one, if we want to see little niece grow up and also help out the parents without so many exhausting north-south trips. so we’re giving it a try for some time, to see how it goes. we found a 1.5 bedroom apartment in the center of aveiro, negotiated a rental contract (while stunned at the price of everything) and just drove here with our stuff.

the new place is small and central, sparsely furnished and with huge windows. there are supermarkets and all kinds of shops within walking distance, a bike sharing system, cafés that open early in the morning, the university… it feels like such a novelty to experience life in a city again (after 10 or so years in the quasi-countryside of conceição), so many possibilities and things to explore! i’m a tiny bit excited about it.

being closer to the parents also means fresh produce, like strawberries and cherries that we pick ourselves from trees! i foresee a lot of deliciousness in our future. :P

postlude

and just like that, with a flick of a switch, we turned a page on this electricity drama and moved in.

it’s hard to feel excited after months of anxiously waiting and battling… i think we’re mostly relieved to reach the end of the tunnel and enjoying the stillness. it took a while for it to sink in, but now this land of sunshine and blue skies is starting to feel like our new home and the exploring can finally begin. i’m looking forward to that.

we’re not bitter though — if anything, this situation has left us determined: we won’t be them. we won’t be the incompetent lot, refusing to apologize or to assume our own faults, hiding behind excuses. we won’t be the postponers, stuck waiting for things to magically happen somehow. in our lives and in our own terms, we shall be hustlers, doers, finishers.

i guess that’s the lesson we took home. oh! and always check that your landlord has aaaaaaaaaall the papers he needs to rent a house. *sigh*

one second everyday — january 2015

january came and went, and we searched for houses while enjoying the sun and the coffee.

and then we got a house and the long wait began. almost a month later, we’re still waiting for the landlord to figure out how to get the place connected to the electrical grid… sigh. as a result, we’re currently experiencing a big case of reverse culture shock — but perhaps that’s something for another post.

omni-impatient

small update just to say that we found a place! to be honest, it’s not at all what i had imagined it would be… but i think it’s growing on me slowly.

the backyard (!) is wild with overgrowth and the house eerily quiet and empty, our voices echoing on the walls and the tiled floor as we pace it, anxiously waiting for all the paperwork to come through.

there’s a terrace on the roof (!!), from where you can savor the expanse of blue sky all around and even catch a glimpse of the sea, glimmering in the distance… it’s perfect to bask in the sun and the knowledge that this is it, this white canvas of a house this will soon be our home for the foreseeable future. we’re almost done.

sunset

the sun warms our skin and it feels luxuriously novel… like a silent blessing. i hope to always remember this.

one second every day – december 2014

so… december! it was truly a bipolar month — the end of a chapter and the beginning of a new adventure.

(sorry for the video’s low quality… not sure what happened there)

we spent the first half of the month frantically selling and giving away every last piece of furniture. we packed our boxes and suitcases, we fretted, we soaked up all the bits of germany… and then we jumped on a plane and got to see all our friends and family for 2 whole weeks before driving south to the promised land! :)
