2 years in berlin

we moved to berlin on april’s first, two years ago. some days, i find it hard to believe we’ve been living here for two years already – yet others, it feels like we’ve been here for a lifetime longer… and still, we barely know berlin at all.

we’re sticking around for a while longer because frankly, it feels comfortable and safe here. things work. for all their bluntness, the germans are strictly predictable and law-abiding, and although it comes at a price, it’s also a reassuring feeling.

besides, there’s so much left to see… so, prost! and here’s to another year of adventures in germany :)

walking on history, IV: the sinti and roma memorial

the sinti and roma holocaust memorial on tiergarten opened only recently – despite them having been one of the largest groups of victims of the second world war. it’s a round pool, with a triangular stone which every day sinks and rises. a single fresh flower is laid on it. on the edges of the pool, the poem ‘Auschwitz’ by Santino Spinelli is displayed:

“Gaunt face
dead eyes
cold lips
quiet
a broken heart
out of breath
without words
no tears.”

on the ground around the pool, scattered stones remind the visitors of the places where sinti and roma were persecuted, while a lonely violin plays in the background…

running in the zoo

you gotta admit, it’s not the most common place for a 10k, but it turned out quite nicely! after a scary moment of oh-my-god-we-forgot-the-microchip!, the boy managed to rent one at the last minute, and finished the race in record time. after that, we ate sausages and spent the rest of the day strolling around, checking out all the animals. :)

and in the end, a well deserved ice-cream! :)
