weeknotes 27/21

it’s been an eventful week around here!

– deers! 😍 we went walking in the local park today, and the guard let us feed the deers, which seem to have significantly multiplied since the last time we were there, a couple of years ago. they were super curious and came over afterwards to check on our picnic too.

– i finished reading a beautifully foolish endeavour, which was a great sequel to an absolutely remarkable thing. it reminded me that i like fiction, and should probably read more of it.

– the bamboo is still shooting upwards, now growing at a rate of 10cms/day… whoa.

– we helped both an 80 year old and a bee-eater this week! the 80 year old was slumped on the side of the road, having fainted from the heat after a bike ride in the midday sun. after the ambulance people declared him well-enough to go home, i gave him a ride and the boy rode his bike back. the bee-eater (one of the most beautiful birds you can find here) was found by the boy on the side of the road on one of his runs. he ran past him, and when he came back he was still there… so he came home, showered, and we drove by again — still there. :( the little thing was having trouble flying, so we picked him up before he was run over by cars, and drove him to RIAS. hopefully he’ll be in good hands and back flying soon!

– 50% vaccinated and feeling great! :D was sitting on the chair in the school gym that they’re using as a vaccination center here and thinking about how much the whole thing felt like waiting for the sorting hat to sort us into one of the houses of hogwarts. i ended up in “house pfizer”.

– this little blog is now running https, thanks to the boy’s never-ending patience for keeping bits of software in tune with the times.

– my phone was most definitely drowned and dead… so i got a new one — an iphone 12 mini, thank you apple for making small phones again! it came on thursday, and although it’s fun to play with new things, i’ve actually enjoyed the feeling of not having one for a few days. the only time i missed it was for reading at night — but as a result, i’ve read more real books and less fanfiction, which is always a plus.

– seeing friends and their kids after a long time. omg, sometimes you don’t know how much you miss someone until you see them again and get flooded by all the feelings!

– this week, we noticed our bamboo plant is growing shoots at an astonishing speed! i knew that bamboo grew fast, but we’re noticing a jump of 5cm from day to day, and it’s just mind-boggling. we could almost sit there and watch it grow!

bandaids are the must-have accessory of 2021, and i’m going to proudly wear mine until it falls off! :D

– summer started on the clock: as soon as the solstice was here, the skies became clear, the wind quieted down and temperatures rose above 25C. it’s been beach-weather everyday this week!

– the boy had his first vaccine, and i have mine scheduled for tomorrow. hurray!

– the parents have arrived, and we’re enjoying some days of their lovingly fussing. :) my mom brought her newest kitchen gadget along, and we’ve been having fun giving it a go with recipes that she’s a bit afraid of trying on her own.

– while taking the parents to the island earlier today, i forgot my phone in my pocket as i waded in the waist-deep water of the ria, and i think i might have accidentally drowned it… sigh. :(

– the boy got his vaccination scheduled for next week! :D i’m supposed to be able to schedule mine tomorrow, and i can’t wait! soooo ready to do my part in order to end this pandemic already. plus, i want hugs!

– speaking of which, my parents are coming to visit next week, both also fully vaccinated and with arms wide open!

– after talking about craig‘s walking adventures in japan for ages, the boy surprised me with a special projects membership for my birthday. it has been a real treat to explore all the members-only materials, and getting even more wanderlust to go hike some pilgrimage routes in japan.

– i also got a new analogue camera, which we built from scratch on my birthday and then took for a spin. can’t wait to see what’ll come out of it!

– and this gorgeous bunch of flowers, from a friend on the other side of the world:

i feel ridiculously lucky, and loved.
