the anatomy of an adventure

…applications, english teacher, forums, celta, freelance web content writer, waiting, graphical designer, hours per week, proofreader, curriculum vitae, relocating, follow-ups, french, teofl, computer science, photography assistant, software engineer, motivated, rmb, native speakers only, proficiency, portfolio, fluent, yes-no-maybe, thesis, experience, accommodation included, classifieds, patient, esl cafes, scamming, ads, certifications, applications, telephone interview, career, email, internship, information technology, craigslist, expat, developer, web-designer, job board, forms, portuguese linguist, z visa, i am looking forward to hearing from you, ana. stop. rewind. play again.

it’s funny to think that, almost a year ago, i was doing the exact same thing that i am doing now: looking for a job abroad, trying my luck everyday. i eventually did get lucky.

note to self: “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again”.

a good fishermans woman

i’m pretending to be a good fishermans woman
just like anna inkersman
the gladiator of all fishermans wives
it makes it a lot easier thinking of you
on the sea where you have to be a month at a time
working hard in the day
your hands cracking from the cold and the salt
in the night when you go to bed
you try to sleep by listening to the boat breathing
the boat breathing
and the only thing
the only thing you can think of is me
waiting for you by the window
with the brightest red lipstick on my lips
just like anna waits for her man
how will i learn
i’ll wait

emiliana torrini, fisherman’s wife

these days my head is filled with network quirks, calculus, emails and the omnipresent countdown.
i still find time to obsess over little things. naturlijk.
little things like emiliana torrini. i stumbled accross her heartstopper video on youtube, and the video is so delicate that i think i instantly fell in love with this fragile creature, pulling the strings of the puppets. half-icelandic, half-italian, she sings surrounded by acoustic guitars, accordeon and the occasional boat creeks… but what really stands out is her voice, her accent, her peculiar way of saying words, not losing syllables on the rush of getting to the end of the sentence.

anyway, i found a few of her songs on itismusic.org, from a session she did in january, 2005, i think. give it a try.

in portugal just life photography

3, 6, 9, 12, 3.

this new years, i’ll try to photograph what i’m doing at 3pm, 6pm, 9pm, 12pm and 3am. a sort of “a day in the life of”.
we’ll be staying at home, i believe, so you won’t get any grand party pictures, but we’ll see. this entry will be updated around those times.

if you can, do it too, and then link back to binary bonsai (the author of the idea). let’s see what people come up with. :)

here’s the first one. 3 o’clock, joão was showing me how to control the tv+dvd using his qtek. troy is playing on tv.

3 o'clock

at 6pm, mom and i are cooking “mexidos”, a typical portuguese dessert, for those days around xmas. look at the mess in the kitchen :P

6

at 9, i was on the phone with my nanny, who has a terrible cold. :)

9 o'clock

well, fireworks and champagne at midnight, naturally… happy 2007. and i guess that will be it, at 3 i think i might be sleeping… :)

midnight :)
