berlin is analogue, potsdamer platz is digital

In the wild 1920s, the pleasure-seeking population would meet here in the cafes, varietés, cinemas and with the “women of the night”. And today? Let’s just say this: Potsdamer Platz is without a doubt, the place in Berlin that feels the least like Berlin. Berlin is eternally unfinished, raw, surprising, a little rough around the edges, confusing, ugly and yet beautiful. Potsdamer Platz on the other hand represents the highly polished picture of the modern urban dream that can be found all over the world. It has slick and smooth facades but it’s also disposable and hollow somehow. In the language of photography: Berlin is analogue and Potsdamer Platz is digital. But you should photograph it anyway, and then jump quickly back into Berlin!

fuji instax

i got a fuji instax last week, a very generous present from our last guests. i’ve had my eyes on one for years… my polaroid stock is running dangerously low, and i’m not buying impossible project film until they get their act together, so instax was the logical option. yet for months i’ve hesitated. i like the simplicity of instant photography, the immediate results and the easy scrapbooking, but my back didn’t really need another big camera to carry around…

now that i have one, i love it! it’s big and bulky, but much lighter than it looks. and the photos, such sharpness and bright colors! my jaw drops every time the colors come to life in the little white square.

i took these photos on the instax’s inaugural tour through the olympic stadium (click for bigger):

(the visit was unplanned, so i’ll let you enjoy the pictures and leave the history of the place for another time, lest this cheerful post be damped by somber memories.)

foto format

when you settle in a new city, there are some things that take a bit to discover. like where to do your waxing, which café makes the best pancakes, or where to develop your film rolls. for the film issue, sometimes you can find tips on flickr groups or old photography forums but more often than not, the information there is outdated. so, a period of trial and error ensues.

the first shops we found in ljubljana that developed medium format rolls weren’t very promising – it always took a while for them to return the negatives, and sometimes they came with marks…

but after inquiring here and there, someone pointed out foto format, in the tunnel on the skyscraper building. and lo and behold, in that small and inconspicuous shop we found the answer to our analog prayers. efficient service with a smile, always plenty of film in stock on the fridge, quick delivery and spotless negatives. we love it and remain faithful customers since day one. really, what else could you ask for? :)

pretty trimmings

i have a growing obsession with trimmings and small, nice decorative details on buildings. do you ever notice them? they’re like candy for the eyes, or the syntactic sugar of construction! :)

more of that, please!

a girl and her holga

i’ve recently passed the 100 photos on a girl and her holga – which for someone as disorganised as me, it’s a true feat :)
here are some of my recent favourites, a bit from all over slovenia:

(while posting, i’ve noticed the last 3 photos were taken in borders with other countries. in a country this small, you meet these invisible lines quite often :) )

i love the holga. it’s ultra-light, therefore perfect to carry everywhere on my bag. it doesn’t need batteries, which means less things to remember. it looks old at first glance, but once people touch it and realise it’s made of plastic, nobody takes it seriously. there are only 12 or 16 photos per roll, making you focus on what you want on each single picture. and it’s so simple and stripped of “options” that not much can go wrong.

adjust focus, shoot, advance film.

perfect.
