orthopedic intermission, 2

….aaand 1.5 years after the first orthopedic intermission, my back decided to remind me once again that it is here, and it has a saying on things. all it took was one mishandled box which i set on the floor without bending my knees, and we’re back to square one.

so this has been a week of laying down and standing up (never sitting), restlessness, impatience and pain with every move. which sucks, but it also makes me appreciate a few things, like the fact that i have a job that can wait a few days, and that can be done while lying down in bed. also, caring friends, and above all, the best boyfriend in the world.

this too shall pass.

5 pretty awesome things

– relocating our “office” to sunny barcelona, and escaping this dreary winter for a few days
– finally flying on a hot air balloon
– getting tickets to our favourite comedian‘s only show in town
– bursting with pride at seeing the boy improve his (already pretty awesome) half-marathon time
– … and then coming home to a mailbox overflowing with letters, postcards and presents! :D

the arduino counter

this past christmas, i gave the boy an arduino microcontroller and an lcd keypad shield, which he has been programming into a postcard counter for postcrossing.

i love the simplicity behind the arduino concept, and its flexibility… there are so many things you can do with it – it’s like lego for grown-ups!

an italian friend showed us the beautiful documentary about arduino below, which shows not only arduino’s roots and inspiration, but also the little details – like how it took them one year to make the perfect blue for the board. it only made me like it more! :)

whole30: done!

yay!

i’ve just finished my first whole30, which means, i went a whole 30 days without:
– grains of any kind
– milk products
– legumes
– sugar, or sugar substitutes
– white potatoes

truth be told, it isn’t that different from how we usually eat when we’re home in berlin – just stricter. normally, i’d have a bit of cheese here and there, an occasional piece of black chocolate or cook with butter – and wouldn’t think too much about what i ate outside of the house. that doesn’t mean i usually go out of my way to eat pasta and bread when we go out – but for the most part i don’t care if the sauce has flour in it, or what kind of oil was used to cook my food.

alas, the whole30 puts all that into question, and makes you think about everything that goes into your plate.

(whenever i tell people we eat paleo, i get saucer-eyes and a concerned “no pasta? no bread? but what can you eat then?!” well… real, unprocessed food, like eggs, fish, meat, vegetables, fruits and nuts!)

anyway, it’s done! how do i feel? freaking fantastic! :) i’ve lost about 5kg – mostly weight i put on during christmas’ glutenfest. also, nothing aches (not even my dodgy back), nothing’s swollen and my energy levels are good!

was it hard? it wasn’t hard per se, or not in the way most people imagine. i didn’t really get cravings… not even while the boy indulged on baskets of bread & cheese next to me. but i missed going out and being with friends without over-thinking it. this level of attention to what you’re eating seriously limits your dining choices – and i’m not sure it’s worth it.

so, i’m happy i’ve done it, but i’m also glad to be back to a reasonable middle ground that works for me. bring on the cheese! :D

a month of letters

in order to complete the letter-writing part of my 101 list, i’ve decided to join the month of letters challenge this coming february. i’m pretty sure i would have no problem acing it just with postcrossing cards… but i really want to try and write more letters!

i’m planning to send them mostly to friends, but i’m still short on recipients – so if you’d like to be included, just leave a comment below! i’d be happy to send you a letter :)
