austria

yesterday we went to austria for a night balloon festival, which was going to be great: 40 or so balloons in a little village in a mountain, lighting up their ‘fires’ in the night to the sound of music. just dreamy… but when we got to the hostel we had booked, we realized it was actually 20km from the festival, far up a hill… it was dark already and snowing, and i was afraid we would get stuck somewhere in the middle of the night. so… yesterday we went to austria and instead of seing a balloon festival, we spent a night in a hostel.

and it was well worth it, if only for the trip! :) just two hours away from here, austria is this snowy fairyland, filled with monochromatic sceneries and people who don’t speak english. so intriguing.

anyway, pictures. this is the view to which we woke up in the hostel, which made it all worthwhile:
the view from our hostel

and the road we had to go on for over a kilometer to get there:
the road to our hostel!

it doesn’t seem as menacing in the morning, but at night, i was pretty scared. it’s all the way up a steep hill in what looks like just a path someone drew in the snow!

on the highway, mountains and pine trees covered in snow and mist all the way there and back:

on a rest stop

and the tunnels. we made 20 km in tunnels in this trip *gulp*, the most menacing of which being the karavanke tunnel:
*gulp*

(pardon the specks in the pictures, the water in the windshield was frozen most of the trip… :))

8800f

my most precious christmas present this year was a scanner, the mighty canon 8800f. since leaving china, i have been searching for a way to get negatives scanned, quickly, cheaply and with quality, but the results (and the options) were often demotivating. so i ended up dragging film along, shooting less and less of it in the past few months.

i know a lot of people that are able to work magic with a digital camera, but i’m not one of them. to me, digital is efficient and cheap – but it doesn’t quite translate the feeling i get from analogue… and so, i’m quite happy to now be able to shoot and scan again, to my heart’s content.

the only problem i’ve found so far has been dust. it’s everywhere and i can’t seem to keep it out of my negatives, no matter how much i clean them… tips?

a day in the woods

the weather was gorgeous today, cold yet with clear blue skies, so we picked a few caches in the woods surrounding ljubljana for a chance to get some vitamin d, breathe fresh air and take a walk in the leaves.

a fresh new year

happy new year!
/
on the first day of the new year, we’re at our best intentions. it’s time to look up the lists we made, and make plans to fulfill them as best as possible, tracing deadlines and objectives.

this time around, i’m running our of time to complete my list of101 things in1001 days. may 2010 sounded really far away three years ago, so my dream list included lots of traveling which ended up not happening according to the plans (other places were visited instead), and there are some things that made sense at the time and which now don’t (getting a piano, for instance). i’m focusing on the rest of the items right now, and i want to do as many as i can till then. to start, today we subscribed the economist and i crossed another item off the list. feels good. :)

i’ll be adding other items to my 2010 to-do list. this year, i want to explore slovenia to the last page of our lonely planet book and beyond, i want to go hiking and snowboarding on its mountains. and i want to use the holga more, and start new projects. and…

what about you? any plans or lists? :)
