weeknotes, 25/21

– summer started on the clock: as soon as the solstice was here, the skies became clear, the wind quieted down and temperatures rose above 25C. it’s been beach-weather everyday this week!

– the boy had his first vaccine, and i have mine scheduled for tomorrow. hurray!

– the parents have arrived, and we’re enjoying some days of their lovingly fussing. :) my mom brought her newest kitchen gadget along, and we’ve been having fun giving it a go with recipes that she’s a bit afraid of trying on her own.

– while taking the parents to the island earlier today, i forgot my phone in my pocket as i waded in the waist-deep water of the ria, and i think i might have accidentally drowned it… sigh. :(

the campervan trip

we watched nomadland sometime ago, and it made me think back to our own campervan trip in november last year, and all the other things i haven’t written about on the blog yet. well, no time like now, right?

we’d been meaning to do a campervan trip for a few years already — it was even on my previous 101 list! they’re a bit expensive to rent… but on the other hand, it’s like taking your home with you on a holiday — and in the middle of a pandemic, that seemed like a reasonably safe option for a short getaway. so we booked one for a few days last year and off we went!

i had never been inside of one, but it’s actually pretty nice and the space is all neatly optimized (these guys did a good tour of the van and its features).

before trying it out, i was a bit concerned about whether we’d be comfortable sleeping there, but it wasn’t nearly as uncomfortable as i had imagined… though on the last day we parked on a bit of a slope which definitely didn’t help! otherwise, everything was rather straightforward and easy enough, even the water/electrical bits. we made decaf and cooked simple meals, gave the shower a try, and also tried staying at different camping grounds, which we had all to ourselves that late in the season.

for the most part, the plan was to go visit our favourite spots in the southwest coast and alentejo, do a bit of hiking and birdwatching and just chill, away from everyone. the weather was nice and sunny, so we took our time lazily driving around and checking out some trails we had long bookmarked. one was a really easy circular path around the barão de são joão, which featured nice views, stone pine woods and lots of sculptures mixed in.

we checked out the abetardas trail, and did the scenic route through the cliffs. the southwest coast was still as beautiful as we remembered it, and after such an intense year, we really needed those blue skies and salty air to recharge.

we enjoyed the experience and will probably repeat it at some point – maybe even upgrade to a van with solar panels! :)

postcrossing on the gaokao!

the gaokao is the name of the national exams in china, a series of tests that all high school students have to do in order to enter university. it’s a pretty big deal, with the whole country practically stopping and holding their breath while a generation of teenagers puts their intellectual skills to the test.

this year in zhejiang province, postcrossing was featured in the english exam! it’s kind of surreal to see something you work on being featured on an exam. the article is from an interview that paulo did to china daily a few years ago.

i thought that was pretty cool! :D

weeknotes, 24/21

– the boy got his vaccination scheduled for next week! :D i’m supposed to be able to schedule mine tomorrow, and i can’t wait! soooo ready to do my part in order to end this pandemic already. plus, i want hugs!

– speaking of which, my parents are coming to visit next week, both also fully vaccinated and with arms wide open!

– after talking about craig‘s walking adventures in japan for ages, the boy surprised me with a special projects membership for my birthday. it has been a real treat to explore all the members-only materials, and getting even more wanderlust to go hike some pilgrimage routes in japan.

– i also got a new analogue camera, which we built from scratch on my birthday and then took for a spin. can’t wait to see what’ll come out of it!

– and this gorgeous bunch of flowers, from a friend on the other side of the world:

i feel ridiculously lucky, and loved.
